Today I’m going to tell you about the school which I was teaching in for my pre-service program. The name is Yupparaj Wittayalai Royal College. You know if there is world “Royal” in Thailand. It means serious business. Yupparaj Wittayalai School was the first government school in Chiang Mai. “Demonstration School of Rayap Region” was its original name and its was founded by King Rama V (1868-1910). The school site is located on the sited of the former rules’s palace. And on December 24, 1995 The Crown Prince (the late being King Rama VI) visited Chiang Mai and gave the name “Yupparaj Wittayalai” to the school.

Yupparaj Wittayalai School has two unique program that is English Program and International Program. Being in Chiang Mai Muang, the Capital of the Province itself that is considered heaven by the expats, it’s a serious business that they need English and International program. So, The Yupparaj English Program (YEP) that was formerly known-as The Mini English Program (MEP) introduced and established in 2002. This program offers English talented student the chance to gain the fundamentals of education knowledge and achieve outstanding result in all areas of academic endeavor. YEP was the first bilingual school in Chiang Mai and has became a leading school in northern Thailand, providing both a strong program of academic studies and the development of students values and attitudes, spiritually, socially and intellectually. And among the English talented student, there are the best of the best in Yupparaj International Program. To shorten, Yupparaj English Program and International Program, we will just call them YEP and YIP.

In addition to a variety of individual students needs, the co-curricular elective program offered is continuously supplemented by YEP and YIP. Students choose their electives from the following range of subjects: Music, Performance Arts, computer Education, personal Development, student Exchange Program, Information and Communication Technology, Buddhism, Studies and Occupational Training.

YIP forms when Yupparaj Wittayalai School was chosen to be one the fourteen schools in the Education Hub Program and has an international program where students follow the Ministry of Education’s 2251 Standard Curriculum. The international curriculum covers the curriculum, aims, student capabilities and desirable characteristic according to a National standard curriculum in order to the changes in the economy, and society and to move forward academically Yupparaj IP students will be educated according to a world class standard in order to a good leaders fulfill the potential, to have a good quality of life with good moral values, together with a sense of responsibility and desirable characteristics according to the school vision, so that they develop and realize as global citizens.

The International Program will raise the quality of education and instill the best character traits within students according to UNESCO’S 21st Century Pledge that all nations develop and realize the curriculum in which all students learn to know, learn to be and learn to do as they develop desirable characteristics as a foundation for global citizenship. Students in quality schools will have a positive emotional well-being, good quality of life. They will also have positive morals, analytical skills, creativity and technology skills, which enable them to work with and live peacefully with others from around the world and to be a good leaders.

Yupparaj Wittayalai School is an educational institution where the students develop their potential through teaching and learning at a world class standard, administered by a quality management system.

To provide a rich and supportive educational environment, helping students to develop skill in effective daily use of English and technology to acquire knowledge as they pursue future success.

Academic Support System at Yupparaj

Teaching system in this school is flexible, it can be Teacher Centered Learning and/or Students Centered Learning. Usually there are two teachers for Higher Matthayom 4-6 (One is a teacher, and one is Co-Teacher). Next is that this school use full day school also, start at 08.00 am with a briefing until 04.30 pm. The lesson taught in English every Monday until Friday, and in Thai at Saturday.

The materials for it can be found in the text book from Library (Resource Center) for free, and also from internet.

The school has midterm exam and final exam as well as quiz to measure and evaluate the knowledge from the students. And in the end of the semester, they’ll give the students their report.

The school follow Thai Curriculum 2551 from the ministry of Education which includes the World Class Standard Subjects, using English as primary medium of instruction. Subject taught in English include English language, mathematics, IT (International Technology), science, health and physical education. Subject such as social science, Buddhist value, Thai Language, the arts, and guidance & vocational student are taught in Thai.
